This translation dissertation is written on the article named “Translators and machine
translation: Knowledge and skills gaps in translator pedagogy” written by Christopher
D. Mellinger from The University of North Carolina. The article was published in 2017
and it is about embedding machine translation (MT) and post-editing in various courses
throughout the curriculum. In the article, Mellinger argues that stand-alone courses on
translation technologies are not efficient enough to prepare students for the language
industry and its requirements. Translation programmes 1 should prepare the translation
students to serve as a post-editor in addition to a translator. Mellinger suggests that
terminology management, controlled authoring, post-editing and engine tuning should
be a part of the translation curriculum. Thus, translation students will be better prepared
for the language industry and can provide post-editing services which are an important
part of the translation sector.
For Mellinger, educators should be aware of the language industry and follow
the advancements of the sector to be able to educate the students and shape the
curriculum accordingly. The article points out the place of MT and post-editing in the
language industry and the importance of preparing translation students to be a translator
as well as a post-editor by incorporating various aspects of MT into the curriculum.; İstanbul 29 Mayıs Üniversitesi Senatosunun 22.06.2020 tarihli ve 2020/14-5 sayılı Açık Bilim Politikası gereğince erişime açılmıştır.

For the thesis project, we were required to choose an article that was related to translation studies and translate it. After an intense research project, I decided on the article named The Theme of Migration in the Paddington Bear Book Series and its Intersemiotic Translation written by the scholar Matej Laš. The paper is about the comparison between the children’s book Paddington the Bear and its movie adaptation. The reason I chose this text is both because I am interested in intersemiotic translation and movie adaptations and the fact that during my childhood I was a fan of its cartoon series. This paper covers the detailed process of selecting the source text and its analysis. Also, the pre-translation process including the terminology research, the translation process and the post-translation process are included in this paper. The paper ends with a conclusion and an appendix section.; İstanbul 29 Mayıs Üniversitesi Senatosunun 22.06.2020 tarihli ve 2020/14-5 sayılı Açık Bilim Politikası gereğince erişime açılmıştır.

For this thesis project, we were required to choose an article related to translation studies as our source-text and then translate it. To that end, i started an intensive research process and mainly looked for articles that were related to subtitle translation as it was my area of interest. This process went on for approximately two months as I could not decide which article would be the best choice for this project. Ultimately, I decided on an article by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülhanım Ünsal called Subtitle Translation: Cultural Components in the Translation of the Film ‘Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au bon Dieu?’ which is a study that mainly focuses on the conveying of cultural components in the subtitle translation of a French comedy film which was translated to Turkish as ‘Sürpriz Damatlar’. In this thesis project, the entire process of source-text selection and analysis, pre-translation, translation and post-translation is expressed in detail and the project is concluded with the conclusion and appendices section.; İstanbul 29 Mayıs Üniversitesi Senatosunun 22.06.2020 tarihli ve 2020/14-5 sayılı Açık Bilim Politikası gereğince erişime açılmıştır.
