Background In recent years, there has been increasing data showing that the risk of acute pancreatitis (AP) is increased in patients using methimazole (MMI). The aim of this population-based study was to investigate the association between drugs used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism (MMI, propylthiouracil, propranolol) and the diagnosis of AP.Material and Methods The database consisted of more than 85 million citizen records between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2022. Within the scope of the study, the data were examined of patients diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and the individuals who developed acute pancreatitis after being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, which was accomplished using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes. Analyses were carried out using R Studio 4.2.0 software. The test-train technique as a machine learning method was used in Cox regression models. Results A total of 1 329 934 individuals diagnosed with hyperthyroidism were examined. Of these, 10 815 (0.81%) patients developed AP after being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. The use of propylthiouracil was determined to increase the probability of experiencing AP diagnosis 0.10-fold (10%) (P .0009), and the use of propranolol decreased the probability of experiencing AP 0.5-fold (5%) (P .032), with a 52.2% predictive success rate. There is no any statistically significant association between MMI use and the probability of experiencing AP according to the model we built. Conclusion Although the risk of experiencing AP was not increased by MMI use, propylthiouracil use increased and propranolol use decreased the risk of experiencing AP in patients with hyperthyroidism. Although drug-induced AP is relatively rare, a firm understanding of the drugs associated with the condition should alert the clinician to appropriately diagnose and treat patients.

Tören, Zeliha; Açan Aslan, Bilge
The concept of empowerment is one of the fundamental building blocks of social work practice. This concept plays a key role in liberating people who feel pressured, such as individuals with disabilities. The main aim of this study is to explore the relationship between social workers in the disability field and the concept of empowerment. This study seeks to understand how social workers perceive the concepts of disability and empowerment, the roles in which they attempt to empower their clients, and the factors that prevent them from applying the empowerment approach. To this end, phenomenological design, a qualitative research method, was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 social workers. Social workers are insightful about the concept of empowerment and their approach to disability. They generally practice at the micro level due to neoliberal policies and the aid-oriented service models. Additionally, there are structural and mentality obstacles that impede the application of the empowerment approach, consequently affecting empowering practices.

Extensive research into dementia has more recently honed in on several key areas. These areas include the advancement of techniques such as the accumulation of amyloid-β and tau proteins, the monitoring of cerebral hypometabolism rates etc. The primary objective of this study is to explore the intricate interplay between Alzheimer’s disease (AD)—other dementias (D) and various chronic illnesses in terms of time, intensity, and connectivity. In this context, we retrospectively examined data of 149,786 individuals aged 65 and above who received diagnoses of AD and D in the year 2020. At frst, logistic regression (LR) analysis has been made with “sex”, “age” and “foreigner” (citizenship status) independent variables for AD and D. The LR models shows that while “sex” and “age” variables have a small rate on the risk of developing AD/D, it is detected that being a foreigner increase the risk of AD and D as 69.8% and 88.5% respectively. Besides, the LR models have middle-level success prediction rate for both of the two dependent variables. Additionally, we used the parallel coordinates graphs method within the R Studio to visualize their relationships and connections. The fndings of this investigation strongly suggest that AD/D don’t stand as isolated conditions, but rather stem from intricate interactions and progressive processes involving diverse chronic diseases over time. Notably, ailments including hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and psychological disorders, contribute substantially to the emergence of both AD and D. This study highlights that the fght against AD/D can only be possible with next generation prophylactic interventions that can predict and manage risks. Such an approach holds the potential to potentially lower AD and dementia to levels that are amenable to treatment.

Yiğit, Talip; Dinçer, Murat
The aim of this study is to understand the distance education method in the context of its historical background and today's applications, and to determine the limitations of distance education in social work education and to develop a new approach that is optimally applicable and sustainable. In this direction, a hybrid model for social work education has been developed within the scope of the study. The standards in the report titled Technology in Social Work Practice were used in the development of the mentioned model. Also benefited from the results of a survey conducted by academics and students of social work programs, with the participation of 50 faculty members and 767 students, by Turkish Association of Schools of Social Work. As a result, the hybrid model proposed at the end of the study displays that the distance education method in social work education can be applied in formal education in a way that can be carried out within certain standards and processes. However, it was understood that the competencies related to student and academician interaction should be reviewed in order to carry out a praxis-oriented social work education built on distance education methodology at an optimal level in the future.
