The Universal And The Particular: A View From Ottoman Homs ca.1700
Abstract
Homs is a venerable town located near the Orontes River. In Ottoman times as well as today, Homs has been at the crossroads of major trade and communication routes that link Syria’s interior to the Mediterranean coast, and that join the country’s north to its south. Typical of Syria, Homs has a continuous history dating from ancient times when it was known as Emesa and produced two Roman Emperors.
