Application of Tradition in Gadamer And The Sameness-Otherness of Islamic Philosophy

Abstract

One of the criticisms that is addressed today to the study of Islamic philosophy is that it is seen as part of a past cut off from the contemporary world. According to Nader El-Bizri, this archival approach to the intellectual history of Islam is an antiquarian compiler of knowledge and is not strictly philosophical since it uses the methods of historiography and philology to establish primarily textual documents. El-Bizri believes that this way of approaching the Islamic corpus lies in continuity with classical and medievalist methods of the study of Greek and Latin texts, in the context of which Islamic philosophy is identified. This approach is of course necessary; but it leaves little room for the question of the meaning and value of the concepts involved from the point of view of contemporary thought. In contrast to this approach is the desire to revive Islamic philosophy in a close correlation with contemporary thought.
