Manipulation in Intralingual Translation

Abstract

From the ‘Real’ Author to the ‘Real’ Reader: Manipulation in Translation, written by Aslı Kalem Bakkal, published in Translogos a Translation Studies Journal, in 2019, is a true example of manipulation in intralingual translation. Manipulation in Translation is one of the most discussed topics in Translation Studies. Many scholars, especially André Lefevere, examined this way of manipulation in literary texts. Lefevere sees this strategy as rewriting. According to the scholar, translation is a tool to manipulate the target reader and govern their perception. This strategy is generally applied when there are political, ideological, or cultural reasons, etc. However, Kalem Bakkal also addresses the topic by giving O’Sullivan’s diagram of translation in narrative communication and Seymour Chatman’s narrative communication model to show the manipulation in this regard as well.
