Translator's Visibility Due To The Indirectness Of Translation On The London Stage
Özet
For their bachelor thesis, students were expected to choose an article to translate. A full
translation process would be held and according to this process, they would write a
commentary in which all the steps and challenges are explained.
This project includes a translation of the article named Indirect translation on
the London stage: Terminology and (in)visibility by Geraldine Brodie. The article is
about the inconsistencies of the terminology which is used to describe both the process
of theatre translation and the translated plays in English Theatre. Due to the reasons
mentioned above, the main issue mentioned in the article is that there are multiple
agents involved in the translation process but not enough terminology to describe the
processes and agents. The complexity of the terms is slightly derived from the
commercial factors.
In the lectures we took during the past four years, we saw that translation of play
texts are complicated since they are written to be performed and mostly related to the
specific culture since the performance needs to get reaction from the audience.
This paper includes a commentary section where source text selection phase,
translation process of the article, including pre and post translation phases are
explained, and a discussion paper about the main theoretical issues discussed in the
article. İstanbul 29 Mayıs Üniversitesi Senatosunun 22.06.2020 tarihli ve 2020/14-5 sayılı Açık Bilim Politikası gereğince erişime açılmıştır.
